Ratings Guide

I thought it would be helpful – for both you and me – to have a guide to my ratings, and to sort of streamline the system a little bit. So here is a general guide to my book review ratings. If you have any questions about my reasons for rating a specific book, please comment on that review post or send me an email.

★★★★★

Loved this book! Everyone should go read it because it’s brilliant. I greatly enjoyed both the story and the writing. Highly recommended.

★★★★✩

I really liked this book, but I’m not in love with it. It’s most likely an excellent book, maybe with a few flaws. Or I really enjoyed it, but I personally think it didn’t merit a full five stars (i.e. the story was predictable or reminiscent of another book, the writing wasn’t great, etc.). Recommended.

★★★✩✩

I liked this book. I enjoyed reading it even though it had flaws. Nothing exciting. Just kind of meh. Also, could be a great story with not-so-great writing. It might be something I consider a guilty pleasure book. Recommended contingent on synopsis – if it interests you, give it a shot.

★★✩✩✩

This book was okay. It had some redeeming qualities, but for whatever reason, I didn’t enjoy reading it. Not recommended.

★✩✩✩✩

I didn’t like this book at all. I probably didn’t finish reading it, and likely resent it for wasting my time. Definitely not recommended.

No Rating

Occasionally, I will give no rating for a book. There are several reasons for this, none of which necessarily mean I didn’t like it. As far as the reviews I publish on this blog are concerned, I will refrain from giving a rating if I feel the book is unfinished (usually self-published books). If you follow me on Goodreads, I also removed ratings for books I read so long ago I don’t remember them well enough to rate them.
