So the Oscars just happened (and I really need to finally watch Parasite), which had me thinking about all the adaptations coming out soon(ish). Because there are a lot of them, all adapted from books I really loved. Here are the ones on my radar:
Little Fires Everywhere. Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington? YES PLEASE. This is such a good drama, and I think it has all the potential to be just as great as Big Little Lies. It’ll be airing on Hulu next month, and I will definitely be watching (and probably making other people watch it, too).
Daisy Jones & The Six. Reese Witherspoon is on a roll with producing great shows (she’s also responsible for Little Fires Everwhere and Big Little Lies). I recently reread this book and seriously cannot wait for the show, because the only thing the book is missing is the music. And we will finally be getting it! Riley Keough (Elvis’s granddaughter) has been cast as Daisy for a while, and Sam Claflin was just announced as Billy Dunne. I have no idea when this will be airing, but I’ll be watching it the second it does. (It’ll be on Amazon Prime, which means I can never cancel my account.)
Circe. So HBO is coming out with HBO Max this year, and while I still don’t understand if it’s different than HBO Now (which I already have), I know I need to get it because they’re adapting Circe by Madeline Miller! And I’m kind of freaking out about it. I loved this book so much, and I can’t wait for the adaptation.
Americanah. This is another upcoming HBO Max show. And, while I didn’t love the book, I do love Lupita Nyong’o. And she’s both producing and starring in this one. Obviously, I need to watch it.
The Witches. Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci together again! Plus Octavia Spencer, which is going to make this even more amazing. Eight-year-old me is going to be so happy. We all need more Roald Dahl (as long as it’s not another creepy remake).
The Secret Garden. This was another one of my childhood favorites, and this just looks so nostalgic. Plus, it has Colin Firth, so you know I have to watch it. Because Mr. Darcy (but not really).
Rebecca. I have been eagerly anticipating this one since I found out about it over a year ago. It’s coming to Netflix this November, and stars Lily James and Armie Hammer. It’s going to be so good. If you haven’t read Rebecca yet, read it soon.
This is Going to Hurt. This is one of the best nonfiction books I’ve read in the past three years, and I was so excited to see that it’s being made into a TV series. Even though that means I will have to figure out how to watch BBC from California.
The Woman in the Window. I really enjoyed this thriller. It’s one of those books I flew through in a day. I think it’s going to be a good thriller. Especially because it’s starring Amy Adams, Gary Oldman, and Juliane Moore.
The One and Only Ivan. I think this is the very first middle grade book I have truly loved in a very long time. It’s such a wonderful story, and I am so excited to see it on the screen. It’s about a gorilla named Ivan who befriends a baby elephant and then uses his artwork to save her from the tiny zoo they’re imprisoned in so she can be with her own kind. I’ll
probably definitely cry during this movie, but I don’t even care.
Station Eleven. HBO Max is seriously bringing it this year with so many of my favorite books, and Station Eleven is included. It’ll star Mackenzie Davis and Himesh Patel (who will also be starring in the adaptation of Eleanor Catton’s The Luminaries this year – which I need to read soon) and it’s going to be amazing!
What adaptations are you looking forward to this year? What’s your favorite recent movie or TV adaptation? (Mine is definitely Little Women.)
