Today, a big storm is hitting California, which means we finally get RAIN. For more than an hour. It’s a big deal you guys. I am very excited to test out the new waterproof boots I bought for my trip to Prague. But I am also very excited to stay inside and read while listening to the rain. I know it’s going to be raining or snowing in a lot of places this weekend, so I thought I’d share five books I think would make great rainy day reads.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. This book is so magical, and the imagery is so beautiful. It’s perfect to read when you want to feel cozy in front of the fire. With a hot chocolate and some caramel corn (and you will want hot chocolate and caramel corn, trust me. If you’re looking for historical fantasy, I cannot recommend this enough. Seriously, it’s like reading pure magic.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. This book starts out with a conversation about an umbrella. So, naturally, it’s the perfect rainy day read. Okay, fine, it’s a stretch, but this book is a great mix of creepy and magical. And it’s my favorite book, so if you like this blog and you haven’t read Neverwhere yet, what are you even doing here? (I’m kidding, you can hate my favorite books if you want. It’s fine.) Like dark contemporary fantasy? This is your book.

Wilder Girls by Rory Power. I think maybe rainy, overcast days just make me want to read books that will both intrigue and scare me. This is one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read – and I love weird books – but I loved it. So if you’re looking for some great young adult that doesn’t read like YA, I highly recommend this one.

Normal People by Sally Rooney. If you’re looking for more of a contemporary drama, I really enjoyed this one. It felt so realistic, like the characters were people you knew. It’s not my favorite book ever, but if contemporary fiction is your thing, you should definitely check it out.

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Historical fiction is one of my absolute favorite things to read when the weather turns cool. And this is one of the best I’ve read in a long time. I loved this so much. And if you’re stuck inside with the rain, why not read a book about a count imprisoned in a hotel?

I’m excited to get some great rainy day reading in. Personally, I will be finishing The Starless Sea, which I am loving so far.
