You already know I am all about that Halloween reading. Which means that the Spookathon is a readathon I look forward to every year. It’s hosted by BooksandLala – check out her announcement video for this year – who I absolutely love. Definitely go check out her channel. This year, it turned out that a few books I already had in my October TBR (plus a few more for fun) fit perfectly into the Spookathon challenges, so I obviously need to do this. Right? Here are the books I’m planning on reading during Spookathon:
Tunnel of Bones by Victoria Schwab – fits the challenges ‘read a book with red on the cover’, ‘read a book with a spooky setting’, ‘read something you wouldn’t normally read’ (middle grade), and ‘read a book with a spooky word (bones) in the title’. I really enjoyed City of Ghosts last year, and am excited to read this one. I think a middle grade book is a great addition to the readathon since I know it’ll be a fairly quick read.
The Girl in Red by Christina Henry – fits the challenges of ‘read a book with red on the cover” (obviously) and ‘read a book with a spooky setting‘. I’ve been meaning to read this since it came out a few months ago, and this seems like the perfect time. It’s a post-apocalyptic Little Red Riding Hood, and I can’t wait. I love Christina Henry’s retellings.
My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite – fits the challenges ‘read a thriller’ and ‘read a book with a spooky word (killer) in the title’. This is a thriller, written by a women of color, and it’s on the shortlist for the Women’s Prize for Fiction for this year. So I need to read it.
The Whisper Man by Alex North – fits the challenges of ‘read a book with a spooky word (does whisper count?) in the title’ and ‘read a thriller’. I am definitely in the mood for thrillers, and this one sounds so good! I’m hoping it’ll be a quick read. If only so I can get some sleep this month.
I know I could technically complete all the challenges just by reading Tunnel of Bones and My Sister the Serial Killer (both of which were on my original reading list for this month), but where’s the fun in that?
Spookathon runs from October 14th through the 20th if you’d like to join in! You don’t have to complete any challenges, just read some spooky books and have fun! Hopefully I published this early enough that you still have time to join in.
If you’re planning on participating in Spookathon this year, what books will you be reading? Let me know in the comments!
