Welcome to the first weekly wrap up of July! This has been a pretty interesting reading week. I read a total of four books, three of which are the genre I said I don’t read: romance. I officially take it back, because I have discovered how much fun romance can be, especially when I’m not really in the mood to read heavier books.
I’ll start with the one book I read this week that isn’t romance: The Lost World by Michael Crichton. I read Jurassic Park a few years ago and really liked it. But this one was… just okay. The set up was way too long (and boring) and I had a hard time getting into it. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great, either.
Now, onto the romance! The first one I read this week was Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey, which I’ve been seeing everywhere lately. I really liked this one. It was a lot of fun, and pretty steamy (which was kind of unexpected). I definitely should not have been reading this at work. But when has that stopped me?
Then I finally read The Kiss Quotent by Helen Hoang, which I’ve been hearing about for ages. Maybe it was the hype, but I didn’t love this one as much as I was expecting to. I found the romance to be a little uncomfortable for me, which I don’t necessarily think is because one of the main characters is autistic. I also didn’t love the family dynamics, which are a huge part of the story. They felt kind of forced. I did like this book, but it was also a little disappointing.
Last, but not least, I read Roomies by Christina Lauren. I recently discovered Christina Lauren, and I think they’re becoming one of my go-to author duos for romance. I thought this one was pretty fun. I liked the romance and the main characters. But I also thought this book had a bit too much going on and maybe could have cut a couple of the subplots. But I did enjoy it. It was a nice, quick read.
As for my current reads, I am in the middle of the audiobook of Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. So far, I’m really enjoying this one. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up getting five stars from me.
I’m also still (slowly) working on The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. I’ll be honest, I’ve had trouble getting into this one. I don’t think it has anything to do with the story, I’m just not exactly in the mood for fantasy right now. I might take a break for a bit and come back to it.
And that’s it for this week! I hope you’re all having a nice weekend. What have you read so far in July?
