Book Review | This Will Only Hurt a Little

I have been a fan of Busy Philipps since Freaks and Geeks. No, I didn’t watch the show in 1999 (I was ten). But I did start watching it maybe six years after it aired. I’ve even owned the DVD by the time I graduated high school. And when I saw that Victoria Schwab enjoyed Busy Philipps’s newly released memoir, I knew I wanted to read it.

(From Goodreads) Busy Philipps’s autobiographical book offers the same unfiltered and candid storytelling that her Instagram followers have come to know and love, from growing up in Scottsdale, Arizona and her painful and painfully funny teen years, to her life as a working actress, mother, and famous best friend.

Busy is the rare entertainer whose impressive arsenal of talents as an actress is equally matched by her storytelling ability, sense of humor, and sharp observations about life, love, and motherhood. Her conversational writing reminds us what we love about her on screens large and small. From film to television to Instagram, Busy delightfully showcases her wry humor and her willingness to bare it all.

This Will Only Hurt a Little is a really great memoir. I truly enjoyed every second I spent with this book, and looked forward to picking it back up every time I put it down. It was a fun read, but it definitely had it’s serious moments, which is what made this such a great book overall.

What I loved most about this memoir is how incredibly honest it is. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t like all the celebrity gossip. All the behind the scenes tidbits were definitely entertaining. Nothing was particularly surprising – particularly the sexism in Hollywood – but it was interesting to learn about Philipps’s first-hand experiences. But she was also brutally honest about growing up and relationships and motherhood, and it was kind of refreshing. It felt real, and it made me like her even more.

★★★★☆ – I really enjoyed This Will Only Hurt a Little! It felt like a conversation with a friend. A cool, famous friend. If you’ve ever watched Freaks and Geeks, or just like celebrity memoirs (like I do), I think you’ll like this one!

  1. Nice review! Sometimes I see celebrity memoirs with a celebrity that I know/have heard of, I just have to resist getting it because there’s just so many books and so many people’s stories I’d love to read about, so I’m glad for this recommendation. Thanks!
