Fall Reading List – Revisitng High School Assigned Reading

It’s finally fall! And I am ridiculously excited. It’s my favorite season for pretty much anything: sweaters, coffee, reading, and pumpkin everything. California is finally getting rain next week, and it’s no longer ninety degrees outside, and I am so ready for a nice, cozy few months filled with good books. I usually plan my October TBR around Halloween, but there are a few books I would really like to read this fall that don’t really fit on my monthly reading lists. I don’t have a specific time I’m setting aside to read them, but I would like to get to them before the holidays. Here are the top five books I want to read sometime this fall:

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I read this freshman year of high school, which was fifteen years ago (I’m not freaking out about that at all). Naturally, I barely remember anything from this book, but I want to. It’s the current My Shared Shelf read, and I just ordered a pretty new copy, and am already a few pages in. It’s kind of Halloween-appropriate, right?

The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. I’ve been hearing about this for ages, and I am so curious about a standalone adult fantasy inspired by Chinese history. I’ve heard it’s kind of dark and brutal, and I’m not opposed to that. I have a major four-month long project at work, so it might be a nice release when people in real life are driving me insane (killing enemies in video games is always strangely cathartic, so this might be, too).

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi. I’ve been hearing about this one for a while, and I’ve seen nothing but great reviews. It’s been a while since I read fantasy (not counting a few comics I read at the beginning of the month), and I’m looking forward to this one.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. This has been on my radar for a while, but, for whatever reason, I don’t think I ever actually read the synopsis until very recently. Which is a shame, because it made me want to immediately read this. I recently picked up a copy from Book Outlet, and I’m excited to get to it.

Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. I’m pretty sure this was on the VERY FIRST reading list I ever published on this blog. In like early 2015. It’s been nearly four years, and I still have not read any Murakami. Clearly, I need to fix this ASAP.

What are some books you’d like to read this fall? Do you reading tastes change a bit when the weather gets cooler like mine do?

  1. This is a great list! I really like reading other people’s TBRs. It always pushes me to read more.
Children of Blood and Bone was on my TBR for such a long time. When I finally got around to reading it, I couldn’t believe that I waited for so long! It was a great read.
I am looking forward to reading The Poppy War as well! It’s a big one, so I might wait until I’m off from school to invest a bunch of time into it. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, so I’m very excited about this one.
Good luck with your fall TBR!

    1. Thank you! Glad to hear you liked Children of Blood and Bone. I think The Poppy War is calling me a bit more, but I do want to get to both before the end of the year. Fingers crossed!
