It’s the middle of the year, which means it is the perfect time to do this tag. I’ve seen it around quite a bit lately, and decided it would be fun to do! (I can’t seem to find the original creator to give them credit, but if you know who it is, please share in the comments!)
Best book you’ve read yet in 2018
I’ve read a fair amount of great books this year, but I think I have to go with Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson. I absolutely loved this book, and was kind of obsessed for a while. It is a brilliant biography! I learned so much, and am really glad to have read it.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2018
This is easily Jane Seymour: The Haunted Queen by Alison Weir, the third book in the Six Tudor Queens series. I love this entire series, and this book was no exception. It’s really close to being my favorite book of the year so far. I’m a huge fan, and I can’t wait to continue on with the series!
New release you haven’t read yet but want to
The only one that really springs to mind is Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. To be honest, I’m not crazy excited about this, but I did enjoy the first two books and want to find out what happens at the end.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
I am highly anticipating Vengeful by V. E. Schwab! I already preordered a signed copy, and can’t wait until I get my hands on it.
I think this one has to go to The Power by Naomi Alderman. I didn’t dislike this book necessarily, I just went into it with really high expectations. It’s supposed to be the new Handmaid’s Tale and was one of Obama’s favorite books last year. Unfortunately, I thought it was just okay. I appreciate what it was trying to do, but it just didn’t impact me as much as I wanted it to, and there were a few things I didn’t like about it.
I’ve had a few surprises this year, but I think my biggest was how much I loved A Fist Around the Heart by Heather Chisvin. I had lower expectations for this one. It’s a debut, and I just wasn’t completely sold. But it was so good! I absolutely loved the story and how much feminism was injected into a historical novel. I don’t think it’s been getting the attention it deserves, but I highly recommend it.
Favorite new author
I’ve read a lot of great authors this year, but the one that kind of stands out is Laura Anderson. I read her book The Darkling Bride, which I enjoyed quite a bit, and immediately wanted to read her other work. She writes great historical fiction, and I’m excited to read more.
Newest fictional crush
I haven’t had many fictional crushes this year, but the one that does come to mind is Aidan Gallagher from The Darkling Bride. He’s a bit like Mr. Darcy, but not quite as standoffish.
Newest favorite character
This might be Circe from Circe. I really loved her. She’s such a multidimensional character, and I really enjoyed reading about her.
Book that made you cry
This might be a shocker, but there is only one book that made me shed a tear so far this year. And it is The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer. 99% of this book was hilarious, but the chapter about gun violence got to be for some reason. It’s a really great book, and has a lot more depth than I was anticipating.
Book that made you happy
I just finished reading Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, and it was so gratifying to know that they caught the Golden State Killer. It made me really happy that her work was finished, and I just loved it.
Favorite book to film adaptation
I haven’t actually seen any of the adaptations I was looking forward to this year. I have actually only watched three adaptations this year, and didn’t read the book for any of them.
Favorite post you have done this year
I think my favorite post this year is 10 Reasons You Should Read Whatever You Want. I had a lot of fun writing this, and it really helped remind me why I should make reading less stressful for myself. And I loved all the feedback I got from all of you – that is always my favorite part of any post.
Most beautiful book you’ve brought this year
I’m going with Circe by Madeline Miller, because I’m kind of obsessed with the cover. It’s so beautiful! I bought the US version, but I think the UK cover is just as amazing. Love the gold and black symmetrical design.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year
WAY too many to mention. Dark Age, Vengeful, and My Plain Jane are a few that immediately come to mind.
