Series I Want to Start/Finish/Continue in 2018

There are so many great series out there, and I feel like I haven’t been reading as much of them as I would like. I own more than a couple complete series I haven’t even started yet, and I think this year, I’d like to start working on at least figuring out if they’re series I want to read. To that end, here are the series I’d like to start reading this year, the series I have already started and hope to finish this year, and the ongoing series I’m planning on continuing this year:

Series to Start

The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. I really need to at least start this series this year, since I have somehow acquired the first five books (I believe there will only be one more). It sounds amazing, and I’m obsessed with the covers. But, really, I just need to justify buying five of these books.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. I currently own the first two books in this series. And have, for going on two years. I think I’m going to really enjoy these, and I’m looking forward to getting into them. Finally.

Temeraire by Naomi Novik. I did a bit better with this series – I only own the first one! I really enjoyed Uprooted and have been meaning to read more of Naomi Novik’s books, and I love the premise of this series: the Napoleonic Wars, but with dragons.

The Conquerer’s Saga by Kiersten White. I absolutely love the idea of a gender-swapped Vlad Dracula story. I also own signed copies of both books in this series. And yet… I haven’t read them.

Series to Finish

Hitchhiker’s Guide by Douglas Adams. In December, I finally reread The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy after about twelve years, which presented the perfect opportunity to continue on and finally get around to the rest of this series, which has been sitting on my shelf for literally a decade.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab. This one won’t be too bad, because there are only two books in this series (at least for now), so I just have to read The Unbound. I really enjoyed The Archived, and am curious to see where Schwab takes the story.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. I loved The Raven Boys, and meant to read at least one more book in the series in 2017, but just didn’t get around to it. Ideally, I’d like to finish the remaining three books, but it just depends on how much I enjoy them.

The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel. I am pretty sure there will only be three books in this series (maybe), the third of which is due out in May. I can’t wait for the conclusion of this story. It’s so unique and mostly unpredictable, and just really fun to read.

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Bet you didn’t know American Gods has a sequel. It does. And it has been sitting on my shelf for ages now. I really need to get to Anansi Boys this year. Especially since I think there will be a BBC special, and I always love those.

Series to Continue

Red Rising by Pierce Brown. Technically, the Red Rising trilogy is done, but Brown is writing a fourth book set in the same world, and they’re calling it part of the series, though it has an entirely different perspective and is set later (it’s really a sequel trilogy). But whatever. I’m really excited for Iron Gold, and I can’t wait to see where that world ended up.

Wayward Children by Seanan McGuire. I loved the first two books in this series – Every Heart a Doorway and Down Among the Sticks and Bones – and am looking forward to getting more stories about all the different worlds these children visited.

Six Tudor Queens by Alison Weir. Last year, I read the first two installments of this series – Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn – and was obsessed. These books are fantastic, and I am so looking forward to reading more about the wives of King Henry VIII that I am less familiar with.

Guide by Mackenzie Lee. Apparently that’s what this series is called (according to Goodreads)? It needs a new name. Just saying. But regardless of the series name, I am looking forward to The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, because who isn’t?

Vicious by V. E. Schwab. I CANNOT wait until we finally get to read Vengeful. The first book is fantastic, and I always love anything V. E. Schwab does.

Dark Gifts by Vic James. I really enjoyed Gilded Cage (which I need to reread), and have high expectations for the sequel, Tarnished City. So many good books this year!

I Hate Fairyland by Skottie Young. It’s comic time! I am loving this series. It is so funny and fun, and I really enjoy reading it. I’m not sure if there will be a volume released this year, but I still have the third one to read, so there’s that.

Saga by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples. I just got volume 8 in the mail, and am excited to continue on with the series.

Ok, so there is no way I’m going to get to everything on this list. But I can try, right? I definitely have a few books that I’m prioritizing, but I’d be happy if I could knock out half of this list in 2018.

Do you have any series you want to start, finish, or continue this year? Let me know in the comments!

  1. So many lovely series! I’m currently only in the middle of maybe 2-3 book series, just because I prefer stand-alone books nowadays. But I’ve always heard great things about The Bone Season… hope you enjoyed it! 🙂

  2. I have SO MANY series I’ve started, or have bought the books of, but have yet to complete. I’ve been meaning to read the final book in the Raven Boys series since it came out… and I just realised that was almost two years ago! I just don’t want it to be over – I think that genuinely might be the issue.

I’ve started the Lady Trent series too, I’m really enjoying it and the covers are so beautiful. I have all five books now thanks to Christmas presents but I’ve only read the first two. It seems like I should get on that in 2018. Also the Temeraire books – because, apparently, one alternate history/historical fantasy series about dragons isn’t enough. 😛

Also I would very much recommend The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon. I love that series, it reads so quickly and the second book in particular, The Mime Order, is excellent!

Good luck with your goal to read these series. 🙂

    1. Yes! I need to finally read The Bone Season. And I’ve only read the first book of The Raven Cycle, so I have a few books to go.

I’m excited to get into Temeraire and Lady Trent. I need more dragons in my life.

  3. Love this idea to write down under sections what you want to read this year. I definitely want to pick up The Bone Season this year, like you I’ve had both first two books on my shelf for a year or two now and I need to pick them up! I’ve heard such amazing things.
