December Wrap Up

I can’t believe 2017 is pretty much over! It’s been a crazy year – pretty terrible overall, in like a worldview sense, but kind of great for me personally. I didn’t end the year on a high note with my reading. I wanted to read more, especially since I just had a week off, but, of course, I got sick and didn’t feel like reading anything. So I’m going into 2018 with a few half-finished books, but it is what it is.

What I Read:

Green by Sam Graham-Felsen – ★★★★☆. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book, but I was seeing it everywhere and my curiosity got the best of me. I’m glad it did, because I really enjoyed this one! You can read my full review of Green if you’re interested – it’ll be out January 2.

Smoke by Dan Vyleta – ★★★☆☆. It feels so good to be going into a new year with this book no longer on my TBR. I’ve had an ARC since it came out over a year and a half ago, and I just never picked it up. It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t love it either. If you want to read more of my thoughts, you can check out my full review of Smoke

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren – ★★★★☆. I loved this memoir about being a scientist. It was such an enlightening and enjoyable read.

The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner – ★★★☆☆. I feel like I hear people talk about this all the time, and I bought it over a year ago, so I decided to finally pick it up. And it was just okay. It wasn’t as amazing as I wanted it to be, but I do think I will continue the series.

Henry IV Part II by William Shakespeare – ★★★★☆. This was pretty much on par with Part I. It’s not my favorite play, but I enjoyed the continuation of the story.

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin – ★★★★★. While this is technically a 2018 release, it was one of my favorite reads of the year. I loved this book, and am so glad I had the opportunity to read it. If you want to find out more, you can read my review of The Immortalists

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams – ★★★★★. This was a reread, but I think it’s been around twelve years since I first read this book. It was time to revisit it, and I loved it even more this time around. I’ve also been meaning to continue the series, and now I can.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens – ★★★☆☆. I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would, because I generally don’t like Dickens’s writing. I didn’t love it, but I’m glad to have crossed it off my TBR after three years.

What I’m Currently Reading:

A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. I really wanted to finish this before the end of the year, but then I got sick and haven’t felt like reading very much for the past week or so. It’s kind of weird and wonderful and I’m enjoying it so far. Will definitely be finishing this in the first week of the new year.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I am currently in the process of rereading the Red Rising trilogy, because Iron Gold is coming out in two weeks! I am so excited, and wanted to revisit the story so it’s fresh in my mind and I don’t miss out on anything with the new book.

What I Watched:

Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I actually saw this the month it came out! That seriously never happens (see below). I know there have been some mixed reviews of this one, but I really liked it. There’s so much I want to talk about, but I don’t want to spoil anything.

Get Out. I know, it took me forever to watch this (my HBO Go wasn’t working, okay?). It was really good. Definitely a strange film, but worth seeing.

La La Land. I caught up on so many things this month, which means I finally watched La La Land. I was honestly expecting to not like this, but I did. It wasn’t amazing, but it was pretty good.

What I Did:

Saw Hamilton! Yes, that’s right. I saw Hamilton. On stage. And I can’t talk enough about how amazing it was. The music is fantastic, but seeing it on stage was so much better. It was just so good, and I am so grateful for that experience.

Non-Book Favorites:

Glade ‘Tree Lighting Wonder’ Wax Melts. Thanks to these, my house smelled like Christmas all month. They’re a little bit spicy, but mostly they just smelled like a Christmas tree, which was nice because I have to get a fake one since my cat likes to eat/climb them.

Blog Highlights:

My Favorite Books of 2017. I love the end of the year, when I can share all of my favorites with you! I read a lot of great books this year, and it was hard to narrow down this list.

That’s it for December (and 2017, I guess). Be sure to come back tomorrow for my 2018 reading stats/overview.

Happy almost New Years!

  1. I watched The Last Jedi too and am going to post a blog post on Monday about it. I found it sooo hard to review without spoilers, so I’ve made spoilers a lighter colour so that those who choose can skip over that (but I doubt anyone will do that). 😂 I enjoyed it so much! Also, my brother is crazy about Hamilton. That must have been amazing to see live! 😃
