I feel like I don’t talk about book adaptations enough on this blog. To be honest, I’m pretty terrible at keeping up with movies (I literally just watched La La Land two days ago), but I do like seeing adaptations of books I like. And there are a lot of adaptations of books that are on my TBR, so I really need to catch up. Here are ten books I want to read (or reread) before their adaptations come out:
Bird Box by Josh Malerman. I keep hearing about this one, and I did enjoy Mallerman’s A House at the Bottom of a Lake earlier this year. But if I’m being honest, it was the incredible cast that drew me to this movie.
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. I have yet to read anything by Agatha Christie (shameful, I know), so I figured I might as well start with this one. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but I do like the cast, so I’ll probably watch it anyway.
The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. I actually already owned this book, but the film cast motivated me to read it even more. I think it’s already out, but it sounds really great.
Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. I’ve had this entire trilogy on my shelves for at least a year, and I really need to read it soon. Especially since the movie, starring Natalie Portman, is coming out soon-ish and looks kind of amazing.
The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. Yet another book that’s been on my TBR for forever, and is being made into a movie with an incredible cast. I’m starting to sense a pattern.
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. It has been way too long since I’ve read a Gillian Flynn book, and out of those I haven’t read, this one interests me most. (I believe this is actually being made into a series, starring Amy Adams.)
The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester. I’m actually pretty excited about this one – which should be obvious given how long it’s been sitting on my shelf, unread (just kidding). It’s about the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary, so obviously I’m interested. I mean, history and English are pretty much the two things I nerd out over regularly.
Stronger by Jeff Bauman. I’ve heard really great things about this movie, and I did recently get copy of the book from Book Outlet. I always have a soft spot for anything Boston-related, and I’m curious about this story.
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle. This one is actually a reread, because this was easily my favorite book in middle school. It’s been forever since I last read it, and I’ve been wanting to reread it anyway. But the movie looks incredible! This is probably the adaptation I am most excited about.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Another reread, because I loved this book and I’ve been planning to reread it before the movie comes out. (P.S. if you haven’t read the book, the second movie trailer is much more accurate.)
Are there any adaptations (film or TV) you’re excited for in 2018? Are there any other adaptations I should have on my radar? Let me know in the comments!
I think I am the only person who doesn’t like RPO … but I want to read A Wrinkle in Time before watching the movie as well. And I’d like to read Wonder too before going to see the film.

Ooh, I forgot about Wonder. To be honest, I wasn’t all that interested until I heard Daveed Diggs was in it. And I think I might actually own the book (somewhere…)

Daveed Diggs is so awesome!! When I saw him in the trailer a short shriek might have escaped me.

Pretty sure I had the same reaction. I love him. (The best was when I was babysitting and we were watching Sesame Street and he came on to rap the Rubber Ducky song. I died.)

I didn’t know they were making a Knife of Never Letting Go movie!!! I loved that series, but it’s definitely a tricky story to turn into a movie. I hope they don’t ruin it! I really liked the adaptation for Murder on the Orient Express, it’s slightly different from the book but also retains its essence in a wonderful way. But even if you didn’t read the book, it’s an incredible movie to watch on its own 🙂

Yup! With Daisy Ridley and Mads Mikkelsen, I haven’t even read the book, but I’m really excited about it. I think they changed the title to Chaos Walking (I’m not sure if they’re combining all the books into one movie.)
I’m looking forward to Murder on the Orient Express. I want to try and read the book in the next month or two.

Ahh, I didn’t know about the Bird Box adaptation! If done well, this will be a wonderful and atmospheric horror film. I still find myself thinking about many of the scenes from the book.

Yup, and it’s amazing. Especially if you love video games and/or the 80s.

I really want to read The Hate U Give before the movie releases. I haven’t read A Wrinkle in Time, so I definitely need to pick that one up!

I loved THUG! I think it’s going to make a great film. And you need to read A Wrinkle in time. It’s such a classic.

Wow, this is a good list. I’ve read Murder on the Orient Express and probably will go watch the movie this weekend 🤗🤗 I’m really excited to see the adaptation of The Knife of Never Letting go, though I wasn’t a fan of the book. I didn’t Sharp Objects was becoming a movie! Have to read it yet.
The one adaptation I’m really excited for is of Crazy Rich Asians – I can’t wait to read the book.

I didn’t know they were making a movie of Professor and Madman! The book is good, though there are parts that get repetitive. As for Orient Express, the book makes more sense b/c they cut stuff out in the movie. Watch it, but for fun. Then watch the David Suchet version. 🙂

Our lists are almost the same haha. But I have read Bird Box and I really enjoyed it and am curious as to how they will do a movie adaptation for it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
