The Grinch Book Tag

This tag was created by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes, who is one of my favorite BookTubers. (I copied the blog/text version of this tag from A Book Nerd, who has some great answers.) I wanted a fun holiday book tag, and this one caught my eye because you all know I’m not shy about sharing my feelings on books I didn’t like. And I like that it’s different than all of the other holiday book tags going around – not that there is anything wrong with those. Or maybe it’s because I’m in a bad mood and feel like being a Grinch today. Either, way, here is The Grinch Book Tag:

Half of the lights on the Christmas tree are burnt out : Name a book/series/character that started out good but then went downhill

I just recently read Smoke by Dan Vyleta (full review will be up soon) and while I really enjoyed the beginning, it just went on too long and lost too much momentum. By the halfway point, I was struggling to care about the characters, even though I still wanted to know what happened to them.

Annoying Great Aunt Sally who will not leave you alone : Name a book that you didn’t enjoy, but everyone else seems to love so it never goes away

I can’t argue with The Book Nerd: this one definitely goes to Caraval by Stephanie Garber. I wanted to like this book, but it’s just… not good. I thought it was mediocre while I was reading it, and the more I think about it, the more I realize just how bad it is. The writing is okay, but the characters are predictable, and I think this book has some terrible messages for young readers.

Your pets keep knocking over the Christmas decoration : Name a character that kept messing things up for everyone else (can’t pick a villain!)

Monty in The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. I love him, but if I had to deal with him in real life, I probably would have hit him at some point.

You hear your parents putting out the presents and learn Santa isn’t real: Name a book you were spoiled for

I’m still mad that I spoiled myself for the end of the Grisha Trilogy. I had to stop halfway through book two (I’ll pick it back up eventually). I found out about the couple that ends up together in the end, and I’m not happy about it, so I couldn’t bring myself to keep reading. I’m starting to get over it, and I’m going to try and finish the series next year. Because I need to move on to Six of Crows.

It’s freezing outside: Name a main character you just couldn’t connect with

Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and it’s giving you anti-romantic feelings : Name a couple you couldn’t stand

That scratchy homemade wool sweater you got for Christmas years ago but won’t get rid of : show some books that have been sitting on your shelves for a while, and you aren’t motivated to read, but you don’t have the heart to get rid of

The majority of my collection of children’s classics (i.e. Black BeautyThe Adventures of Huckleberry FinnPeter Pan). I have way too many of them. And Vanity Fair, which has been sitting on my shelves, unread, for like fifteen years. I tend to buy books that are really well known out of curiosity and then rarely end up reading them.

SPOILER for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: I’m still mad about Hedwig. Out of all of the deaths in the series, this one hurt the most. It broke my heart, especially since she died protecting Harry. I have a harder time with animal deaths than human ones, especially in fiction.

The malls are overly crowded with holiday shoppers: Name a series that has too many books in it/went on too long

The Grinch : Name a main character you HATE (No villians again!)

I hope you enjoyed this tag! Let me know in the comments what book or character you hated most this year.

And if you would like to do this tag, consider yourself tagged!
