I’m still in a reading slump. I’m not sure if it’s because I feel lost after having finished grad school, or just the stress from watching the world implode, but I haven’t felt like reading or writing anything in the past couple of weeks. This week was also busy with work and family obligations, so I’ve been too tired to do much of anything. A sinus infection and four hours of sleep a night are not a good combo. Still, I did manage to finish an audiobook this week (thanks long work commute!) and am working on a few other books. Slowly. Very slowly.
The book I did finish this week is Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. I absolutely loved it! It’s a beautiful story about a family who experiences profound tragedy and has to come to terms with it. Their struggle with understanding what’s happened, and their complicated history was really something incredible. I also loved that the family is biracial in a time when that was far from common in America. I have a few books I need to review in the next couple of weeks, but expect a full review on Everything I Never Told You soonish.
After finishing that audiobook, I moved on to Frederik Backman’s A Man Called Ove. I’m not very far in, but I am enjoying it so far. It’s a slower-paced novel, but I do love it’s simplicity. And I think reading about retired people looking back on their lives is kind of a theme for me at the moment, because the other book I’m reading is Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney. I was enjoying this book a lot, and then Lillian Boxfish turned out to be kind of a badass feminist, and I fell in love. I’m not that far into this book either, but, from what read, I think I’m going to like it.
Finally, I’m finishing up The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker. I’ve heard great things about this book, and I definitely think it’s an interesting story, but I’m just having trouble connecting to the characters. To be fair, I think that’s partly due to my reading slump, but that’s life. I plan on having a review up for this one tomorrow.
As a side note, I think I might move my Weekly Wrap Ups to Sundays (instead of Saturdays), because on busy weeks it’s just easier, and this way it’s consistent. If you have any preference, please let me know.
One final thing for this weekend:
I’m sure you’re all keeping up with the news and staying informed, so you know what’s been happening around the country this weekend. If, like me, you want to help and aren’t sure how, please consider donating to the ACLU (donation link here). They are defending those who cannot defend themselves, and we need that more than ever now. And, speaking from personal experience, donating even the smallest amount feels incredible.
I hope you’re all having a wonderful Sunday!
