This year, there aren’t very many books on my holiday wishlist. Mostly because my family generally refuses to contribute to my book addiction. But also because there are SO MANY books on my TBR that I can’t justify adding that many to it right now. Still, there are a few books that I would really love to receive this Christmas, because they are books I do want to read soon. Here are the books I asked for this year:
- The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. One of the main reasons I haven’t jumped into this series yet is because I didn’t want to get sucked in while working with my thesis. But my thesis is almost done, and I cannot wait to read these! I particularly want the British box set – those white covers are so beautiful.
- Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race by Margot Lee Shetterly. I was completely unaware of this story until I saw the trailer for the film adaptation, and now I’m obsessed! Every time I see the trailer, I get a huge smile on my face. I will be getting this book soon (whether or not I have to buy it for myself).
- Hamilton: The Revolution by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jeremy McCarter. Like pretty much everyone else, I’m obsessed with Hamilton and everything about it. I already have the Ron Chernow bio, so I need this in my collection.
- The Inheritance Trilogy by N. K. Jemisin. I am almost done with my thesis, which means I’m going to make 2017 the year of big books I didn’t have time to read. I keep hearing incredible things about this trilogy, and the bind-up is beautiful. I need it.
- Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. I feel like this is the book I missed this year. I actually borrowed it from the library twice, but didn’t get very far through it. It is definitely on my must-read list, though, and I think I will love having it on my shelves.
What books are on your holiday wishlist this year?

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you to get all of those, but especially the Hamilton book! IT IS FREAKING BEAUTIFUL!!!! And Lin’s notes are hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.

Thanks! If I don’t get it, I’ll probably end up just getting it for myself. Because I think I need it.

I bought it for myself too, a birthday present from me to me.

I wish my family contributed more to my book obsession 😂😂 I’ve only been an avid reader/book collector since the summer of 2014 so I don’t think they understand that I would happily unwrap books on Christmas Day 😂

I have the opposite problem – my family thinks I have too many books, so they won’t buy me any more haha

Hidden Figures is great – I’m reading it now! There’s almost no dialogue, though, so I’m interested to see how they do the movie.

That is interesting! The dialogue in the trailer is excellent, but I wonder how many liberties they took.

Obviously they will have had to make a lot of it up — based on the information in the book, of course. I do recommend reading it if you want to know the real story.

The movie looks great, but I will definitely be reading the book soon, too. Thanks!

I really want to read Mistborn as well! It’s been on my TBR for years, but i’ve just never really had the desire to pick it up? There are just other books I would rather read, so it’s been pushed to the back. Hamilton: The revolution was amazing! It’s perfect for any Hamilton fans. 😉

Thanks! Mistborn started out like that for me, but I feel like I hear people talk about it all the time, so it keeps moving up my list.

I also want to read home going, it’s not something I would usually pick, but everyone I know who has read it absolutely loves it. So I think I need to give it a try. I can’t wait to hear what you think about it.

Same here! So many different people have recommended it. I feel like it’s one of those books I should read. I’ll definitely review it whenever I get around to it!

I’m pretty sure “Homegoing” is going to take the number-one spot of my best-of-the-year list. It was phenomenal — such an amazing work of fiction, but also super timely. Every other book on your list besides the Hamilton one is on my to-read list. I just went to take a peek at the U.K. Mistborn covers and you are so right — WAY more my style. Sounds like you have a lot of great reading to look forward to in 2017! 🙂
