Since it’s halfway through 2016 (seriously – how?!) I decided I’d finally do the Mid-Year Freak Out tag. Which isn’t so much a freak out as it is an update on what I read, what I liked, and what I didn’t like so far this year. I was kind of indirectly tagged by Liv @ LibroLiv to do this tag (she tagged anyone who wanted to do it). I’m not sure who’s done this already, but if you want to do this tag, consider yourself tagged. Enjoy!
Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2016
I’ve read so many truly incredible books this year! I’ve been sitting here for like five minutes, and I can’t pick just one. So: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August, All the Light We Cannot See, Morning Star, A Gathering of Shadows The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, When Breath Becomes Air, A Little Life, The Name of the Wind, My Lady Jane… okay, I’m done.
Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2016
That would have to be A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab. I loved the first book, but this one was even better! I adored everything about it, and having to wait for the third book is close to torture. Can I preorder it yet?
Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year
Right now, I really can’t wait to get my hands on The Cursed Child, by J. K. Rowling. I’ve wanted a new HP story for years, and we’re finally getting it!
Probably Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. I was really looking forward to it because it’s a prequel to one of my favorite novels, Jane Eyre, but it didn’t live up to Charlotte Brontë.
I think I’m going to go with The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner, because I wasn’t expecting much from it and it blew me away. I think I spent the last 100 pages sobbing into my book. It gave me hope for contemporary YA drama.
Newest Fictional Crush
Probably Gifford from My Lady Jane or Levi from Fangirl. As a nerdy writer girl, I definitely appreciated how much they liked that about their significant others. I mean, when Jane is upset, Gifford brings her a book. I need that in my life.
Newest Favorite Character
There have been a lot of good characters, but my newest favorite is definitely Jane from My Lady Jane. She’s kind of like my spirit animal (if you’ve read the book, you’ll get the pun). She’s a bookworm to the highest degree, and I thought she was great!
Book That Made You Cry
There have been a few books that made my cry this year, but Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life made my cry more than any other book ever. It was 800 pages of über-depressing amazingness. I kind of want to cry again just thinking about it.
Book That Made You Happy
The ending of Morning Star still gives me warm fuzzy feelings. It was so, so good. It’s been a struggle to hold of rereading until the end of the year
Favorite Book to Film Adaptation
I’m ashamed of how few movies I’ve seen this year. I haven’t even seen Me Before You yet! So I’m going to have to go with a movie/book that I watched/read this year, even though the movie came out last year; The Danish Girl. The movie and book were both fantastic, but I actually liked the film ending more. Still think Eddie Redmayne should have gotten the Oscar (and yes, I did watch The Revenant and I still think Eddie was better than Leo).
Favorite Post You Have Done This Year
Some of my favorite posts are the ones I write that don’t really follow any set formula. This is definitely one of my favorite posts I’ve ever done on this blog. I almost want to repost it soon, because it’s still relevant.
Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year
Physically? Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. It’s just so perfect. I can’t decide whether I like it better with or without the dust jacket. It’s really something special. The story is good, too.
What Books Do You Need to Read By the End of the Year
I really need to read Moby Dick, which I actually just started. I have an ARC of The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore that I need to read before it comes out in September. And I should probably finish The Fellowship of the Ring before the end of the year.
