This week’s wrap up is going to be a short one, because I didn’t get too much reading done this week. School and life got in the way of me finishing up the Tome Topple Readathon, but I did end up finishing having read over 2,000 pages, so I still think I did really well.
The first book I finished this week was Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This is a graphic memoir about a girl growing up in the midst of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. It was this month’s pick for the Our Shared Shelf book club, and I am so glad I ended up reading it! It was so good, on so many different levels. If you’re interested in seeing a full review, you can check it out here.
The second book I finished this week was Do Not Disturb by A. R. Torre, the second book in the Deanna Madden series. I picked this one up on a whim, and read it in a single sitting. So far, I’ve been really impressed with Torre’s books. I was surprised to find I loved the first one, The Girl in 6E, and this one was just as good. There is definitely an erotic element to these books, which is kind of fun, but they’re primarily thrillers, and good thrillers at that. The premise is really fascinating, and I’m looking forward to the next installment.
Finally, this week, I’ve been working on reading two books. The first is Walden by Henry David Thoreau. I am really enjoying it, which isn’t a surprise, since I’ve read probably about half of it as excerpts at some point. This was actually my pick this month for the Reading New England Challenge, and it might be my favorite book so far for this challenge. Really glad I finally picked it up!
The second book I’ve been slowly making my way through is A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. This is a reread for me, since I first read it two years ago and really wanted a refresher before I continue the series. Still, it’s a pretty dense book, and I was really ambitious thinking I’d finish it in a week. I’m not quite halfway through at the moment, so I think I’m just going to continue chugging along until I finish it. Side note: I am crazy excited for tonight’s episode. I actually made my family reschedule plans just to make sure I wouldn’t get spoiled. Anyway…
I also wanted to briefly mention that I picked up two new graphic novels/comics this week, which I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I got the first volumes of Rat Queens and I Hate Fairyland, both of which I’ve heard great things about! I’m a bit obsessed with Saga, and I’ve been meaning to read more of these non-superhero comics which have been gaining popularity lately. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
One last little note: I didn’t end up doing my homework reading this week (oops), so there won’t be a short story mini review post for this past week. I’m planning on catching up this week, so expect one next Sunday, along with a regularly scheduled weekly wrap up.
Hope you all have a great weekend! And Happy Father’s Day to any of my readers who are also dads!
