Book Review | A Gathering of Shadows

If you follow me on Instagram, you might know that I happened to stumble upon an early copy of V. E. Schwab’s A Gathering of Shadows at Barnes & Noble. And if you don’t follow me on Instagram, you should. I post pretty pictures of books (and occasionally cats). But the point here is, I got a copy of A Gathering of Shadows, I read it, and it was awesome.

Since this is a sequel, I’ve decided not to give a synopsis, because I don’t want to spoil the first book for you. If you want a synopsis for A Gathering of Shadows, you can click here to A Gathering of Shadows Finalview it on Goodreads. If you’re interested, you should also check out my review on the first book in this series, A Darker Shade of Magic, which – spoiler (not really) – was one of my favorite books of 2015. It’s no secret I love this series, and V. E. Schwab, and pretty much anything she writes. So I had pretty high expectations for A Gathering of Shadows. And I was not disappointed! It’s full of magic and intrigue, and a little bit of romance. I really enjoy the magic system in this world, and it was showcased perfectly in this book. The plot was interesting and fun, and kept me turning pages for hours. I also absolutely loved the romances in this book. They’re definitely not the main part of the story, but they’re perfect! Schwab created a little bit of a love triangle, and had me rooting for both sides. That’s how good she is. (It was resolved by the end of the book, so if you don’t let love triangles, don’t let that dissuade you. It’s barely a love triangle, really. I promise. It works.) I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book! Which brings me to the ending, because: CLIFFHANGER. This book ends with a giant cliffhanger. I’m pretty sure I whined out loud when I turned the final page. Because I think I know what’s going to happen, but I don’t know for sure. And it’s going to bother me until the next book comes out (which I’m hoping is next year, because I can’t wait any longer than that).

Everything in this book just works. I love the characters. I love the story. I love the world. It’s amazing. You should read it.

Rating: ★★★★★

Obviously, I’m giving A Gathering of Shadows five stars. This is a truly incredible fantasy series, and I am really looking forward to reading the next installment.
