This week was kind of eventful for me. I finally drove over to the public library (I’m pretty sure the last time I went to the one in my hometown, I was about twelve). I broke my toe accidentally kicking a wall (because I’m the clumsiest person alive; this is the third time this has happened to me, albeit on different walls). And I read some good books.
The first book I finished this week was The Winter Girl by Matt Marinovich. I got an ARC (advance reader copy) a while ago, because it sounded very interesting. The synopsis had me hoping for something akin to Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train. But, unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. On Tuesday, I made it over to the public library, and honestly, was pretty grossed out. Maybe its because the last public library I visited was the Boston Public Library, which is just so pretty and nice. Maybe it was just because the whole place smelled like cigarette smoke and body odor. Either way, I couldn’t spend more than ten minutes in there, so I hopped in my car, got home, and looked at their digital editions online. I ended up checking out A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I read about fifty pages of it, and then returned it – not because I didn’t like it (I loved what I read so far), but because I’m just too busy right now to finish a 700 page book in two weeks (it took me three days to get through those 50 pages), so I’m going to let someone else read it, and then return to it when I have a bit more time.
On Wednesday, I finished the audiobook I’ve been listening to, which was My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem. I absolutely adored this book! It changed how I think about a lot of things, and really motivated me to find more little ways in which I can make a difference. I’m really glad Emma Watson chose it for her new book club, because I probably wouldn’t have picked it up otherwise.
And that’s really it for this week, reading-wise. I am planning on finishing All the Light We Cannot See soon – I just got the audiobook, so I can listen on my commute and finish it faster. And, in the next week, I’d really like to reread Red Rising and Golden Son by Pierce Brown in anticipation of the release of Morning Star, the final book in the trilogy, early next month.
This week I also decided that I will be applying for a second masters degree after I graduate! I love school, and it terrifies me that I’ll be done by the end of this year. And, honestly, an extra two years will give me some more time to save up money to be able to move when I get a job (and take that trip to Italy my cousin and I have been pseudo-planning), which helps. So, I will hopefully be starting a masters in publishing at George Washington University at some point next year! I am officially an enormous book nerd.
Hope you all had a great week! I’d love to hear what you’re reading/planning to read soon – let me know in the comments! And I’m looking for some new audiobook suggestions for my commute, so feel free to leave those in the comments as well.
