Some of my most prized books are special editions or collectors editions. There is something just so special about a beautifully made book. While most of my favorite special editions are hard to find books I picked up in used bookstores, a few are easily acquired online. I think they make great gifts for any reader. Here are some of my favorites:
For the classic fantasy aficionado, you can’t go wrong with this gorgeous Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition. My copy of this was actually a gift (kind of – my dad’s coworker was getting rid of some Star Wars memorabilia and I found this in the back). It’s a really gorgeous copy that will look great on any bookshelf. A matching edition of The Hobbit was also released.
If you’re buying for someone who enjoys graphic novels, Neil Gaiman, or just darker fiction, the ultimate gift is The Sandman Omnibus Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. These books are beautifully bound in black and burgundy leather, with silver lettering on the cover, and black stained pages. They are also impressively heavy. (And if you use the above links, you can get them for about half price on Amazon.)
On my personal Christmas list this year is this amazing copy of Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I don’t care that I already own two copies, it’s just so pretty! I think this would make an excellent gift for a young reader, anyone who loves classics, or die-hard Little Women fans.
If you’re looking for beautiful editions of classics, I don’t think you can beat the Jane Austen Vintage Classics. I own all six: Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, Emma, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park. And they are some of the most beautiful books I own. Buy one as a stocking-stuffer, or give the set as a lovely gift.
The brand-new illustrated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone would make a great gift for almost anyone. I know it’d be on my Christmas list if I hadn’t already gotten it for myself! And if you’re looking for a major book splurge, the deluxe edition is absolutely beautiful!
