I was tagged by Loreva of La Book Dreamer to do the Sleeper and the Spindle Book Tag. This actually worked out really well, since I just read The Sleeper and the Spindle a couple weeks ago! It’s a fairy tale retelling by Neil Gaiman that combines Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. It was completely different from what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it! And I have always loved fairy tales, so I am excited to do this tag!
What would you change about your favorite fairy tale?
My favorite fairy tale is The Twelve Dancing Princesses, which was originally published by The Brothers Grimm. I think maybe I would change the ending, because it is a little creepy – a princess is forced to marry an old man, and the young princes that danced with the twelve princesses without the King’s consent are cursed.
If you were cursed to sleep forever, where would you sleep?
My bed? I guess if I could choose anywhere, I’d want it to be somewhere really comfortable and quiet. Like a luxury hotel or a palace.
If you could live in a fairy tale, which one would you choose?
Beauty and the Beast. Because I could totally live with the Beast if I had access to his library.
What is the worst curse a witch could bestow upon you?
I’m going to go with Loreva on this one: something where I was able to control my mind, but not my body. Like what Killgrave does in Jessica Jones (if you haven’t watched it yet, you need to – just saying).
Would you choose to be Snow White or Sleeping Beauty?
Well, if I’m going with the characters in The Sleeper and the Spindle, definitely Snow White, because she’s kind of a badass. But overall, probably Sleeping Beauty, because at least then my curse wouldn’t be the result of my own stupidity (never take apples from strangers).
Which fairy tale would you want to red as a YA retelling?
I think it would be interesting to see The Twelve Dancing Princesses as a YA retelling. I’ve actually considered writing it myself. Or something like Rumplestiltskin, which is my other favorite fairy tale. I’d want to see something a bit untraditional (i.e. not Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, or Cinderella).
And that’s it for the tag! Let me know what your favorite fairy tale is in the comments! And if you haven’t read The Sleeper and the Spindle, and like fairy tales, I would definitely recommend it!
