Today’s challenge is to write about my top three pet peeves. Honestly, this was pretty hard to narrow down. Because, while I like to think of myself as a tolerant person, there are just so many little things that get on my nerves like crazy. So here are my top three.
Inconsiderate People. If you read yesterday’s challenge, you’d know that, for the most part, I’m really sensitive to other people’s feelings. Which means I hate it that much more when I see someone being insensitive (consciously or otherwise). Honestly, for me, this is the hardest part about living with other people. It took me a long time to realize that most people tend not to think too much about how their actions affect other people. But it still gets on my nerves. I know what it’s like to be the person whose feelings were hurt because of an ignorant comment or an inadvertently rude gesture. And as much as that sucks, I really hate seeing it done to other people.
When People Have to Fill any Silence. I have mild social anxiety. I’m fine in small groups and I love good conversation. But when people start to fill any and all silences with mindless chatter, my brain starts to implode. My family is loud, Italian, and Palestinian, so there is always talking. And while I do really enjoy spending time with my family, there are a few family members that will talk for hours about practically nothing. No conversation. Just a soliloquy about how their friend decorated their house or what exactly everyone ate for dinner at the restaurant. You know what? Silence is okay. So is talking about something other people actually care about. And if I have to hear what color shirts every one of your twenty students wore on the field trip (for the third time), I’m going to hurt someone. Seriously, just the thought of having to listen to it is making me cringe right now.

Bad Grammar. For the most part, I’m pretty tolerant of bad grammar in informal settings/spoken out loud. We all make mistakes – I’m sure there are grammatical errors on this blog. But when it’s publicly published, it pains me. There is a vet clinic near my house with a sign out front that reads: “Cat’s and Dogs”. Why? Just why? It’s not even like they made the same mistake on both words. Just one. I cringe every single time I drive by, even if I don’t look at it. I know it’s there.
I definitely have a few more pet peeves, but those are probably my biggest three. What are some of yours?
